PROVIDENCE — Greater than 20 advocacy teams – from the League of Ladies Voters to the Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC to Amnesty Worldwide – are urging Gov. Dan McKee to go the following step in guaranteeing entry to an abortion in Rhode island.

The teams are asking McKee to difficulty an executive order that might do what Rhode Island legislators had been unwilling to do on this election 12 months: repeal the legislation that bans state-funded abortion protection for state workers and Medicaid recipients.

It’s not but clear if McKee is keen to do this, or whether or not he believes he has the authorized authority to take action.

However the advocacy teams insisted he does, in an open letter to him this week.

What’s forward:Will states’ post-Roe protections really block abortion investigations?

To bolster their case, they cited a number of government orders McKee and his predecessor, fellow Democrat Gina Raimondo, issued through the pandemic, together with one which barred insurance coverage carriers from imposing limitations on the supply of telehealth companies.

McKee spokesman Matt Sheaff issued the assertion, in response to a Journal inquiry about his stance: “The Governor continues to be in full help of the Equality in Abortion Protection Act that might defend entry to reproductive well being care and we’re reviewing this request.”
